Programme 2

Ischaemic heart disease (IHD) is the most common cause of death in Ireland. It is caused by narrowing of the Coronary Arteries, which supply oxygen to the muscular wall of the heart.

Various factors have been identified that increase one’s risk of IHD.

These include:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Family history
  • Hypertension
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Lack of exercise
  • High cholesterol levels

Cardiac screening includes a questionnaire to identify your risk factors, weight, height and BMI calculation, fasting blood lipids (cholesterol profile), blood sugar, and an exercise/stress ECG.

This is performed with a doctor in attendance.

When your results have been analysed, a report from the attending doctor will be forwarded to you, along with the ECG tracing for future reference.
